2021

Through examples taken from comedies recently attributed to Lope de Vega, this article deals with certain problems that should be considered when studying or editing plays of doubtful authorship. The analysis focuses on methods traditionally used to resolve problematic attributions, such as the study of versification, orthoepy and syllable counting. The conclusion argues that all of these tools —as well as the landmark works by Morley and Bruerton or W. Poesse — still offer great surprises and challenges for researchers. Thus, the development of new methods, such as stylometry, should not impel us to dismiss the classic approaches. Quite the opposite: old and new methods inform one another.

CARTEGGIO CROCE-RICCI

2009

Extending the DSE. LOD support and TEI/IIIF integration in EVT

2020

Current digital scholarly editions (DSEs) have the opportunity of evolving to dynamic objects interacting with other Internet-based resources thanks to open frameworks such as IIIF and LOD. This paper showcases and discusses two new functionalities of EVT (Edition Visualization Technology), version 2: one improving the management of named entities (f.i. personal names) through the use of LOD resources such as FOAF and DBpedia; the other, providing integration of the published text with digital images of the textual primary sources accessed from online repositories (e.g. e-codices or digital libraries such as the Vaticana or the Ambrosiana) via the IIIF protocol.

The lai “Si bé, Fortuna, has dat lo torn”: a critical edition of the catalan poem from the novel Triste deleitación

2019

The Castilian novel Triste deleitación, written in the late fifteenth century by an author from the Crown of Aragon, includes several letters and poems. One of these poems, “Sy bé, Fortuna, as dat lo torn”, is written in Catalan. This article presents the poem’s annotated critical edition, which reports how it is indebted to the Catalan lyrical tradition. Written in an evolved form of the French lai cultivated by various Catalan poets, the poem is clearly influenced by Pere Torroella’s lai “Qui volrà veure un pobre estat”, and linked to two other similar lais also dependent on Torroella’s. This edition is completed by a translation into modern Catalan.

2020

Abstract The article discusses the various German Shakespeare editions produced by the Deutsche Shakespeare-Gesellschaft (German Shakespeare Society) between its foundation in April 1864 and the end of the 19th century. The society’s eclectic editorial output ranged from a critical edition in 12 volumes (1867–1871), through multi-volume editions for the theatre and for German families (1870–1878), to a cheap one-volume edition (1891). All these editions were based on the Shakespeare translations of August Wilhelm Schlegel and Ludwig Tieck and his circle (Dorothea Tieck and Wolf Heinrich Friedrich Karl Graf von Baudissin), published by the Reimer Publishing House in Leipzig. The editors corr…

Anne de Graville Translates Alain Chartier : Identifying the Manuscript Source in the Margins of B.N. fr. 2235

2020

An examination of the single manuscript of Anne de Graville’s Rondeau, a ‘translation’ of Alain Chartier’s La Belle dame sans mercy, as well as consideration of 1424 and Carl Wahlund’s 1897 critical edition reveals that Anne used several manuscripts and early printed editions in establishing the version of Chartier’s poem written in the margins of BN fr 2253. The base exemplar was most likely St. Petersburg, National Library of Russia MS fr. f° v. XIV. 0007, with variants found in BN fr 20026, BN fr 924, and the early printed editions.
